Sierra Club California Kicks Off Drive Green California Campaign in 2010!
Since 2001 Sierra Club California has campaigned to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases from passenger vehicles, and this was the year that we passed the final roadblocks on that route to cleaner cars. In April, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tasked by President Obama, announced strong new national standards that would follow California’s lead for 2012 through 2016. And then in May, President Obama once again tasked the U.S. EPA to set strong greenhouse gas standards for our cars and light truck standards for 2017 through 2025.
Sierra Club California has already begun a significant ramp up of our efforts to reduce harmful pollutants coming from our cars. We are working hard to ensure that California continues being a national leader in adopting robust standards when it comes to making our vehicles greener. Much is at stake! We must reduce greenhouse gases and other pollutants coming from our cars and trucks that are causing so much damage to our atmosphere and to the air that our children breathe. California must be an innovator in advancing new technology that can offer consumers the opportunity to purchase greener vehicles like plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles. Cleaner cars will also spur new technology that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and create jobs.
The tragedy in the Gulf can provide us with one lesson; we must rid ourselves of our dangerous dependence on oil and start looking to new vehicle technologies that are here now! Many automakers are poised to put zero and low emission passenger vehicles on the road. We need your help to make sure that this happens NOW!
