Sierra Club California Opposes Proposed Big Oil Initiative on November 2010 Ballot

Big Texas oil companies are trying to buy their way out of cleaning up their California refineries and fuels.  Companies like Valero and Tesoro recently announced that they plan on fully funding a November ballot initiative that would halt clean energy efforts and pollution control standards aimed at cleaning up our air and atmosphere for our kids and future generations.

The challenge of slowing and preparing for climate change affects nearly all of our work. We strongly supported the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which mandates an enforceable statewide limit on greenhouse gas emissions. Now that the law is in place, we are focusing on California’s Air Resources Board and the other state agencies charged with taking the concrete steps necessary to bring down emissions. We work closely with the staff and members of the Air Board, communicate our message through newspapers, television, radio and the Internet, and testify at hearings to ensure that California moves quickly and credibly to slow global warming. There are simple solutions like mandating more aerodynamic trucks, and there are more complex solutions such as promoting efficient land use patterns and cleaner transportation fuels. In either case, Sierra Club California will continue to be on the front lines of the issue.
